Alertus Technologies and the University of Texas at Austin Seminar Recap: Exploring Best Emergency Preparedness Practices
By Jordan Chisley, Office Administrator at Alertus Technologies
Collaboration and networking filled the air at Alertus’ latest seminar at the University of Texas this past July, where emergency preparedness practices were at the forefront of the discussion. Four leaders in emergency preparedness, hailing from varying industries, gathered together to discuss different tools and tips that organizations can leverage to prepare for emergencies successfully.
Topics such as leveraging strategies for large scale university events, operational continuity challenges, best practices for active shooter situations, and how to best help victims post-emergency were just some of the things that local companies had the opportunity to learn more about.
With that being said, it became clear that in addition to those things the importance of having connections and fostering relationships is another important detail that tends to be overlooked when it comes to an organization’s emergency preparedness.
James H. Johnson, the Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety at the University of Texas at Austin, at one point told the other attendees, “you have my number now,” as a way of ensuring that the open line of communication that was started with this seminar continues well past its completion. By the seminar’s end, it was understood by everyone in attendance that the real challenges began once everyone parts ways and go back to their respective organizations, so the open forum typesetting that this particular seminar adopted was simply the first step in getting that emergency preparedness ball rolling.
